About Maxine Meas

Maxine Meas I knew I wanted to help people for my career and I believe massage therapy is a great way to help relieve people of their aches and pains allowing them to function at their optimum. For the past three years I have been doing massage therapy and bringing wellness into peoples lives, although since I was about ten I have been massaging my parents shoulders and necks. One day my sister and I joked we should be massage people when we grow up and now I am a massage therapist. I attended Massage Therapy School here in San Diego (2008) and there I obtained my foundation to get to where I am now. In school I focused very hard and took my studies very seriously, I was determined to do my best and excel in everything I did. During my time in school I was honor roll student with perfect attendance.

Many of my clients suffer from sciatica which is inflammation of the sciatic nerve. While training in massage school I too suffered from this problem. In school I would receive massage from fellow classmates and nothing would change the low back pain and the sciatica would not get better.  I asked my teacher about this to seek a new perspective to my problem, from then on she helped open my eyes as to how to approach the body. All of my classmates were working on the areas I expressed pain and discomfort in, when really those were points of referral. The valuable lesson I learned then was, the body is like a domino.  Many times there is a cause and effect. Just because there is an effect on one area of the body does not mean it is the cause. My knowledge of the human body and how it works helps me to find that cause within my clients.

Over the past 3 years I’ve worked with many clients.  Some notable clients are two of the chargers football team members and a personal trainer who has written his own book and trained Oprah. For the members of the chargers I used Sports and Thai massage. The sports massage is very helpful as there are different types.  They are pre-event, post-event, and restorative.  The pre-event sports massage helps the muscles loosen up and stimulate them getting ready for the upcoming event.  The goal is to make the muscles more pliable for extreme physical activity and help prevent injury.  Post- event massage helps normalize the body’s tissue after the athlete’s event.  Restorative sports massage is one of the more popular forms.  This massage is provided during the athlete’s training and is aimed at allowing the athlete to better train for the event.   It also helps in lengthening and stretching the muscle groups used for the athletic activity the client will be performing. Sports massage is a great way for clients to enjoy their sport of choice, because it allows the body to be in optimal health and help alleviate pain associated with any injuries.

My personal trainer client was seeking Thai Massage which incorporates compression and passive stretching so that the client gets a pure stretch.  This is an eastern massage modality which follows the lines of meridians and is also very beneficial for the muscles and releasing tension.  A good way to describe Thai Massage is to say it is close to a “lazy yoga”, since all the movement is coming from the therapist and the client simply lies there while they are placed into positions to create the stretch and release the body. This type of massage is also very rejuvenating and better for more of a energetic feel after a massage rather than for relaxation.  I also used some Tui Na techniques of skin rolling to help alleviate his adhesions on the layers of fascia and connective tissue.

Professionally I am most passionate about helping people. For me having a client come to me with great discomfort, a lack of range of motion, or even a headache or migraine and being able to relieve that for them is such a rewarding feeling. I love that through massage therapy I have helped and continue to help people who have debilitating problems. When a client comes in unable to move their head from side to side to me that is dangerous, imagine that while you are driving not able to see your blind spots for me this would be terrifying. At the end of the session when the client can move their neck around look over their shoulder it’s a great feeling to know I was able to help them.

One thing I deeply believe is Massage is 90% your intentions and 10% your technique. I put forth my best intentions with every technique I use. I feel the client can feel that energy from the therapist and that is what makes the difference in the massage, rather than receiving a mechanical massage where someone may just go through the motions they are receiving a therapeutic massage which can make a difference for people seeking wellness.

Bringing balance to your life, one massage at a time.
